What To Buy For My Birth

We don't require you to buy a kit

Some practices require you to purchase a pre-made birth kit. The problem with that approach is this: You never use most of the stuff in the kit! We will arrive at your home with most of these things, anyway. There are a few things we do recommend you pick up, however.

#1 Birth Pool liner

There is a specific liner you will need to fit our birth pools. We cannot use the pools without this! We use the "Birth Pool in a Box" brand pools (mini size). You can find the right one at the following links:

#2 A mattress protector

Let's face it - birth can be messy. You should have something over your bed to protect your mattress and good sheets from being ruined. You can buy a fancy waterproof protector, or simply employ the following strategy:

1) Get a cheap shower curtain liner at the dollar store

2) Make your bed with your regular sheets.

3) Cover those sheets with your shower curtain liner. Cover that with your oldest, most stained-up fitted sheet (or a thrifted one!).

4) When we clean up, you can throw both away and sleep on clean sheets!

#3 Linens

Gather or thrift these – depending on their use, these are typically able to be laundered, but occasionally stain. 6 bath towels, 6 washcloths, 4 receiving blankets, and a fitted sheet (see #2).

#4 Snacks and Drinks

You're about to burn a LOT of calories! Throughout your labor, we'll be encouraging you to eat and drink. Try to focus on energy sources that are calorie-dense and easy to digest, and provide electrolytes as well. Electrolyte drinks, honey sticks, fruit, yogurt, applesauce, yogurt, popsicles, fruit snacks, etc. are all good options.

#5 Postpartum Supplies

Adult diapers are the easiest and most comfortable thing for postpartum bleeding! Some people like mesh underwear and a heavy flow pad instead. You definitely need a good peri-bottle, and may want other supplies such as ‘padsicles’, witch hazel pads, hemorrhoid cream, and a heating pad.
