Is Home Birth For Me?

We get this question, and ones like it,  fairly often. To be sure, there are some moms for whom a home birth is not a great idea. Certain pregnancy complications and preexistent medical conditions may be better handled in a hospital. We've put together a list of great reasons to have a home birth, and some reasons NOT to:

You SHOULD have a home birth if:

You want to develop a relationship with your provider that is based on trust, respect, and informed consent.

You SHOULD NOT have a home birth if:

You don't care who is "on call" to deliver your baby, and plan on doing "whatever the doctor says" in labor. You should also not have a home birth to simply avoid a local hospital.

You SHOULD have a home birth if:

You feel more comfortable being able to control your birth environment, including who is there for your delivery.

You SHOULD NOT have a home birth if:

You have serious health issues that affect your pregnancy, such as uncontrolled diabetes, severe hypertension, preeclampsia, cardiac problems, or if you're having twins.

You SHOULD have a home birth if:

You are a healthy, low-risk mom and are absolutely committed to birthing at home.

You SHOULD NOT have a home birth if:

You are not 100% committed to a home birth, or your partner is not on board. Also if you want an epidural, home birth is not for you.

You SHOULD have a home birth if:

You are committed to a safe, natural approach to labor and birth, in the comfort of your own home, surrounded by people who genuinely care about you and your baby!
